Moving Box Creativity

Moving Box Creativity
Who says a moving box has to be a box? Why can’t it be a plastic barrel or bin? Well, short answer is you can actually use just about anything to move your belongings, but honestly? A moving box is probably the easy way to get your move done without too much hassle.

So you’re thinking a moving box is a moving box. Well yes and no. Did you realize there is more than just one kind of moving box to choose from? The first thing people generally think of when going to get a moving box is – is it big enough to hold my stereo set, books, pillows, train set or kitchen dishes (and no, not all in the same moving box). Did you know there are large, small, wardrobe, picture and specialty boxes?

Bah, you just want a box, four sides and a bottom, now that is a moving box. Yes it is, but you won’t be getting your mirror into it or your pictures, or your clothes for that matter. Well, unless you hand pack every blouse, skirt, sweater, pair of pants, shoes, hats, scarves, coats – you get the idea. It’s way easier to get a wardrobe box, set it up, open the closet doors and hang everything up in the box. Presto, you’re done. Shut and tape the box.

The other thing you need to take into consideration, unless of course you happen to be doing the total move on your own, is box sizes. You will notice if you get your moving boxes from a moving company that they come in standard sizes – all their boxes do, from picture to wardrobe boxes. There’s a good reason for this. It has to do with how they pack things neatly into a moving van. If you have a whole hodge podge of assorted sized boxes, just try and fit that logically into a truck. It won’t work very well and you will wind up with a haphazard pile of boxes that might not stay in place.

Keep this in mind as well, moving boxes that you get from a moving company, or friends who have just moved and used a moving company, are sturdy, thicker boxes. Boxes you get out of the dumpster, while useable, are not always that heavy or durable. Who needs to pack a load of books in a box that skews sideways when it’s picked up?

Pictures and mirrors are the worst headaches when moving too. They’re not always a standard size or shape and that makes them harder to pack. If you get a decent box from a mover or moving supply provider, you will stand a good chance of shipping your mirror in one piece. If you opt to use the blankets, sheets, towels and other padding route, there is no guarantee your mirror will arrive in one piece. So, rather than just getting any old moving boxes, try and get ones that will actually stand up to the punishment of moving.

Moving Boxes: Environmentally Friendly

Moving Boxes
Odd to think of moving boxes being environmentally friendly, but they are. Think about it. Most of the boxes these days – unless you are getting moving boxes from the grocery store – are flat and easy to put together. Just slap some packing tape on the bottom and you’re ready to roll.

The other point is, easy to make into a box, easy to flatten and recycle the moving boxes when you are done. You can even offer them on any one of the Freecycle.org lists in your state. Hundreds of moving boxes a year are offered and taken on these lists. Might as well contribute to the community and keep things out of the landfill. And let’s face it moving boxes are usually one of the things that most often go to the dump.

Whether or not you get your moving boxes from the grocery store or buy them from the moving company, you need to get various sizes for various items in your house. Think seriously about getting the proper moving boxes for your fragile items like mirrors or pictures. And, when packing them into the truck – if you are doing the move yourself – use extra sheets and bedding to act as cushioning.

Moving boxes should be labeled with what is in them as it is being packed. There is nothing that causes more stress than to arrive at your new home with a ton of unlabelled boxes. You don’t need the headache of trying to play guess what is in the boxes when you’re trying to set up a new home.

Here’s a tip you likely would not think about, since most people just pack what they can into whatever they have. Pack the heavier items in smaller boxes and the lighter items in larger boxes. It keeps weights more consistent. Most people tend to put the heavy items in the larger boxes, and we all can relate to what a struggle that is to load later.

Another idea to consider is your packing material to use. Many people use newspaper, which works well, but is really dirty. Ask your moving company about buying the paper they use to wrap things. It’s plain cream and comes in large sheets. Or, approach you local newspaper and ask them if the sell their roll ends. It’s an inexpensive way to get tons of newsprint (plain paper on a roll) to use for packing.

One other use for boxes, and this works well if you have small children is to save some of them when you get to your final destination, so the kids can make a fort. In fact if you can unpack a few larger boxes first, the kids can play while you set up the kitchen etc.

Moving On Up

Moving On Up
Moving can be a pretty big production. First you have to go through your things, then pack them up, move them to the truck, take them back out and put them away in your new place. It really is a pain if you aren’t completely prepared for it.

Moving day is a big deal especially if you aren’t ready for it. It can be stressful and chaotic but there are things that you can do to help you ease through the moving process. Well maybe not completely ease through it but make it a whole lot less stressful.

Sort It Out
First thing is first. Going through all of the things that you have accumulated over the years can getting rid of some of those things can make packing it all up so much easier. Things that you no longer have a use for set them aside. If you are moving a considerable distance away then take into consideration the moving costs which we will talk about later. Sometimes replacing something when you get to your new destination may actually be cheaper than moving it, so check that option out too. With the things that you don’t want anymore you could have a garage sale to maybe take a little tiny bit of the burden of moving costs and even maybe some replacement cost for new items.

If you have documents that you are going to need as soon as you get to your new place keep them safe and with you. Things like school transcripts, utility provider numbers for bill name transfer, insurance cards, driver’s licenses, house or lease paperwork; anything that you can think of that may be fairly important to you as soon as you move. Not being able to find something like that can be super stressful. Consider keeping them in a box or folder in your car or even locked in your glove compartment. This way there is no way that those items will be misplaced.

Pack It Up
Now comes one of the more tedious parts, packing it all up in boxes. Knowing where to start can be somewhat overwhelming. Start with things that you don’t use on an everyday basis. Seasonal items are always a great place to start. Most people don’t use holiday decorations everyday of the year so they can be packed up and put aside. Next pack up your pictures and nicnacks, they are nice to look at but when you don’t have to worry about all of those little things on moving day it will take a lot off of your mind. Most linens and dishes can be packed next, eating off of paper plates for a week won’t be so bad if you can get those big bulky boxes full of dishes packed up and set aside. The more boxes you pack the more you will feel a sense of calm and accomplishment.

Be sure to set out the everyday necessary items like soaps and toothbrushes. If you are starting to pack up your clothes as well sometimes it’s helpful to just keep out ensembles’ for the next week so you won’t have to pack all of your clothing at once. You don’t have to pack everything but packing most of it can keep moving day nice an easy.

Finish Up
As you start moving everything out of rooms clean up as you go. Doing this will definitely give you a sense of accomplishment when you can look at a clan and empty room. Before moving make sure that you have all of your lose ends tied up. Pay all of your final bills; pick up any prescriptions or dry cleaning that may be lagging. After this is all done you are subsequently ready for your moving truck!

Moving Costs
Compare, compare, compare! If you are planning on renting a moving truck and loading it up yourself make sure to check out different providers. There are very few that offer you a flat rate for renting a truck. Typically you have to pay a great deal if you go over the mileage that is permitted and you always have to fill up the fuel to where the gauge was when you acquired the truck or else you will have to pay a hefty fee for that too.

Also make sure that there is a place close to your moving destination to drop the truck off. It would be pretty terrible to pack up your truck for moving day, drive fifteen hundred mils and then drive back just to drop off a truck. There are also professional movers that you can hire. When moving this can be a great help especially if you don’t have a lot of help. Movers will move everything out of your house including furniture and all of your boxes. When reaching your destination they will even move your things into your new place. Moving companies range in prices so check out all of them and how far they will travel before deciding on one.

Just Breathe
With some handy tips you can make your exciting moving day a thing to remember for good reasons instead of bad ones. It doesn’t have to be a day from hell; it can be one of the best days of your life if you are prepared. Whether you are moving to the house across the street or a house across the country being prepared can make it so much easier. Congrats and happy moving!
